How to use the calculator
- Annual limit is the most the insurer will pay in a year. Higher limits cost more, but protect you from very large bills such as cancer treatment.
- Annual deductible is what you pay each year before coverage starts. A higher deductible lowers your monthly price.
- Reimbursement rate is the share of each bill the insurer pays after the deductible.
- Vet bill slider shows your total cost for the year, including premiums, with and without insurance.
What we learned building it
- The deductible moves the price most. On Embrace, going from a $250 to a $1,000 deductible cut the premium by about 42%.
- Unlimited coverage is cheaper than many expect. It cost about 40% more than a $5,000 limit for the same pet.
- Going from 80% to 90% reimbursement added about 11% to the price.
These ratios held exactly across every pet and age we tested on Embrace. Other insurers price differently: Fetch, for example, charged about 23% more to raise the limit from $5,000 to $10,000, compared with 13% on Embrace.
