Maine coon insurance cost $22 to $52 a month in our Idaho test for an accident-and-illness plan with a $5,000 annual limit. A 1-year-old Maine coon was quoted $22.16 by Fetch and $27.94 by Embrace. At age 8, the quotes rose to $32.10 and $51.04.

What the quotes show:
- Fetch was cheaper at both ages, by 21% at age 1 and 37% at age 8.
- Embrace charges more for Maine coons. Its quotes were 24% higher than for a mixed-breed cat of the same age.
- Embrace’s price rose 83% from age 1 to 8, compared with 45% for Fetch.
Common Maine coon health problems
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). A thickening of the heart muscle that can lead to heart failure, often without early signs. WebMD reports that about 30% of Maine coons carry a gene linked to it.
- Hip dysplasia. Rare in most cats but more common in Maine coons because of their size. It can lead to arthritis.
- Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). An inherited condition that weakens the back legs, usually noticed in kittens.
Breeders can test for some of these genes. Ask for test results, and enroll before a vet records a heart murmur, since it would likely be treated as pre-existing.
