The short answer

German shepherd insurance cost $30 to $83 a month in our Idaho test for an accident-and-illness plan with a $5,000 annual limit. A 1-year-old German shepherd was quoted $30.38 by Fetch and $48.76 by Embrace. At age 7, the quotes rose to $72.14 and $82.89.

German shepherds are prone to costly joint and knee problems, so the annual limit matters. Use our premium calculator to see what a higher limit costs.

Other conditions often linked to the breed include bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), degenerative myelopathy and arthritis. A single knee surgery can use more than a $5,000 limit, so consider $10,000 or more if you can afford it.

How to choose a plan

  • Enroll young. Most insurers exclude pre-existing conditions, and hip and knee problems often show up after age 2.
  • Check the orthopedic waiting period. Many insurers wait 6 months before covering hip and knee problems. Some shorten it if a vet examines your dog early.
  • Price a higher limit. With Embrace, unlimited coverage for a 1-year-old German shepherd would cost about $68 a month, compared with $48.76 for a $5,000 limit.
