The short answer
Rottweiler insurance cost $39 to $142 a month in our Idaho test for an accident-and-illness plan with a $5,000 annual limit. A 1-year-old Rottweiler was quoted $39.26 by Fetch and $83.50 by Embrace. At age 7, the quotes rose to $101.51 and $141.96.
That makes the Rottweiler the most expensive dog we have quoted. Large size, joint problems and a higher risk of bone cancer all push the price up. Use our premium calculator to see how the deductible changes it.
Real quotes for Nampa, Idaho
| Sample dog | Embrace | Fetch |
|---|---|---|
| Rottweiler, 1 year | $83.50 | $39.26 |
| Rottweiler, 7 years | $141.96 | $101.51 |
| For comparison: Labrador retriever, 1 year | $48.76 | $26.66 |
What the quotes show:
- Fetch was cheaper at both ages, by 53% at age 1 and 28% at age 7.
- Embrace charged 71% more for a Rottweiler than for a Lab of the same age.
- Fetch’s price rose 159% between ages 1 and 7, compared with 70% for Embrace.
Common Rottweiler health problems
Embrace’s quote page lists these as the breed’s main risks, with typical treatment costs:
| Condition | Risk | Typical cost to treat |
|---|---|---|
| Cranial cruciate ligament (knee) tear | High | $6,545 |
| Hip dysplasia | High | $3,443 |
| Allergic dermatitis | Medium | $1,295 |
Rottweilers are also one of the breeds most at risk of osteosarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer. A 2021 study of more than 900,000 UK dogs led by the University of Bristol and the Royal Veterinary College named the Rottweiler among the highest-risk breeds. Cancer treatment can easily exceed a $5,000 limit.
How to choose a plan
- Consider a higher limit. Between knee surgery and cancer risk, a $10,000 or unlimited limit makes more sense for a Rottweiler than for most breeds. On Embrace, unlimited coverage for a 1-year-old would cost about $117 a month.
- Use the deductible to manage cost. A $1,000 deductible would bring Embrace’s price for a 1-year-old down to about $49 a month.
- Enroll early. Hip and knee problems are usually excluded once a vet records signs of them.
