The short answer

English bulldog insurance cost $36 to $128 a month in our Idaho test for an accident-and-illness plan with a $5,000 annual limit. A 1-year-old bulldog was quoted $35.84 by Fetch and $75.04 by Embrace. At age 7, the quotes rose to $94.04 and $127.57.

Bulldogs are among the most expensive dogs to insure because they have so many breed-related health problems. That is also why coverage tends to pay off for them. Use our premium calculator to compare limits and deductibles.

Common English bulldog health problems

A Royal Veterinary College study of 2,662 English bulldogs found they were more than twice as likely as other dogs to have at least one health problem in a year. They had much higher odds of these conditions:

ConditionOdds compared with other dogs
Skin fold dermatitis38 times higher
Cherry eye27 times higher
Breathing problems (BOAS)19 times higher
Dry eye12 times higher

Embrace’s quote page also lists knee ligament tears (typical cost to treat $6,545), seizures ($2,815) and allergic skin disease ($1,295) as the breed’s main risks.

How to choose a plan

  • Check for breed exclusions. Make sure the policy covers breathing surgery, eye surgery and skin conditions. Some insurers limit coverage for conditions linked to a breed’s build.
  • Enroll as a puppy. Skin, eye and breathing problems often start early, and anything a vet records before you buy will likely be excluded.
  • Lower the price with the deductible, not the limit. On Embrace, a $1,000 deductible would cut the 1-year-old’s price to about $44 a month.
