The short answer

Dachshund insurance cost $22 to $60 a month in our Idaho test for an accident-and-illness plan with a $5,000 annual limit. A 1-year-old dachshund was quoted $22.16 by Fetch and $35.04 by Embrace. At age 7, the quotes rose to $39.53 and $59.56.

The main reason to insure a dachshund is back disease. About 1 in 4 dachshunds will have some degree of it in their lifetime, and severe cases can need surgery. Use our premium calculator to compare limits and deductibles.

Common dachshund health problems

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is the biggest risk. Health surveys by the UK Dachshund Breed Council found that about 1 in 4 dachshunds will have some degree of back disease, 10 to 12 times the rate in dogs overall. It is most likely between ages 4 and 7.

Embrace’s quote page lists these other common risks, with typical treatment costs:

How to choose a plan

  • Enroll before any back trouble. If a vet notes back pain before you buy, insurers will likely treat IVDD as pre-existing.
  • Read the back and spine terms. Check whether disc disease falls under an orthopedic waiting period in your state.
  • Keep the limit high enough for surgery. Spinal surgery and hospital care can use a large part of a $5,000 limit, so compare the price of $10,000 or more.
