The short answer

Golden retriever insurance usually costs $25 to $90 a month for an accident-and-illness plan with a $5,000 annual limit. In our Idaho test, a 1-year-old golden was quoted $27.54 by Fetch and $48.76 by Embrace.

The bigger question for goldens is the annual limit. The breed has one of the highest cancer rates of any dog, and cancer treatment can exceed $10,000. Use our premium calculator to see what a higher limit costs. For a general overview, see our dog insurance cost guide.

Real quotes for Nampa, Idaho

We ran live quotes on October 29, 2026, for ZIP code 83651. Fetch was cheaper at both ages, but its price more than doubled between ages 1 and 7.

Sample dogEmbraceFetch
Golden retriever, 1 year$48.76$27.54
Golden retriever, 7 years$82.89$64.55
For comparison: Labrador retriever, 7 years$82.89$47.10
Accident-and-illness plans, $5,000 annual limit, 80% reimbursement. Embrace: $250 deductible, no add-ons. Fetch: $300 deductible, includes sick-visit exam fee coverage. Quoted October 29, 2026, ZIP 83651.

What the quotes show:

  • Insurers price goldens differently. Embrace quoted a golden and a Lab at exactly the same price. Fetch charged 37% more for a 7-year-old golden than for a 7-year-old Lab.
  • Age matters more with Fetch. From age 1 to age 7, Fetch’s price rose 134%, while Embrace’s rose 70%.
  • A higher limit costs less than you might think. Moving the 1-year-old golden from a $5,000 limit to unlimited coverage on Embrace raised the price from $48.76 to $68.26 a month.

These are sample quotes, not offers. Your price will differ by age, ZIP code and the date you apply.

Golden retrievers and cancer

Cancer is the main reason golden owners buy insurance. About 60% of golden retrievers die of cancer, according to the American Animal Hospital Association.

The Morris Animal Foundation’s Golden Retriever Lifetime Study has followed 3,044 goldens since 2012. As of 2024, cancer had caused 1,132 deaths in the study. Hemangiosarcoma, a fast-moving cancer of the blood vessels, caused 70% of those cancer deaths, and 90% of dogs with it die within a year of diagnosis, even with treatment.

A full course of cancer treatment, including oncologist visits, chemotherapy and monitoring, often costs more than $10,000. Chemotherapy alone runs $150 to $600 per dose. That is why the annual limit matters more for goldens than for most breeds: a $5,000 limit can run out partway through treatment.

What to check before you buy

  • Cancer coverage. Make sure the plan covers cancer diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Accident-only plans do not.
  • The annual limit. For goldens, a $10,000 limit or unlimited coverage is worth pricing. Try different limits in our calculator.
  • Hereditary conditions. Hip and elbow dysplasia are inherited. Embrace’s accident-and-illness plan lists genetic and congenital conditions as covered.
  • Orthopedic waiting periods. Fetch has a 180-day exclusion for orthopedic conditions, and its hip exclusion cannot be waived. Embrace excludes hip and knee problems that show symptoms in the first 180 days, though a vet exam can shorten that in some states.
  • Pre-existing conditions. Lumps, limping or skin problems noted by a vet before coverage starts can be excluded. Enroll before symptoms appear.

Is pet insurance worth it for a golden retriever?

For most golden owners, yes. A young golden costs about $330 to $585 a year to insure, based on our quotes. Given the breed’s cancer rate, there is a real chance of facing a five-figure bill at some point in the dog’s life.

Insurance makes the most sense if a $5,000 to $15,000 bill would strain your budget, and if you can enroll while your golden is young and has no health problems on record. Read more in Is pet insurance worth it?

How to get the best price

  • Enroll as a puppy. Premiums start lower, and conditions are less likely to be pre-existing.
  • Compare at least two insurers on identical settings. Our quotes for the same 1-year-old golden differed by $21 a month.
  • Trade a higher deductible for a higher limit. On Embrace, a $500 deductible with unlimited coverage cost $56.07 a month for our 1-year-old golden, close to the $48.76 price of a $5,000 limit with a $250 deductible.
  • Compare again at renewal. Prices rise with age, especially with some insurers.

Frequently asked questions

How much is pet insurance for a golden retriever per month?

Usually $25 to $90 a month for an accident-and-illness plan with a $5,000 limit. Unlimited coverage for an adult golden can cost $115 or more.

Does pet insurance cover cancer in golden retrievers?

Accident-and-illness plans generally cover cancer diagnosis and treatment, as long as the cancer was not present or suspected before coverage began.

What annual limit should I choose for a golden?

Consider at least $10,000. A full course of cancer treatment can exceed that, so unlimited coverage is worth pricing too.

Is golden retriever insurance more expensive than Lab insurance?

It depends on the insurer. Embrace quoted both breeds at the same price, while Fetch charged 37% more for a 7-year-old golden than for a 7-year-old Lab.
