The short answer

Persian cat insurance cost $22 to $52 a month in our Idaho test for an accident-and-illness plan with a $5,000 annual limit. A 1-year-old Persian was quoted $22.16 by Fetch and $27.94 by Embrace. At age 8, the quotes rose to $33.92 and $51.04.

Persians need more vet care than most cats. A large UK study found that about 2 in 3 Persians had at least one recorded health problem. For general cat prices, see our cat insurance cost guide.

Common Persian health problems

A Royal Veterinary College study of 3,325 Persian cats found that 64.9% had at least one recorded disorder. The most common were:

Coat and fur problems12.7%
Dental disease11.3%
Overgrown nails7.2%
Eye discharge5.8%

The same study found that kidney disease was the most common cause of death in Persians (23.4%). Their flat faces can also cause breathing and eye problems.

How to choose a plan

  • Check dental coverage. Dental disease is common in Persians. Most accident-and-illness plans cover dental illness, but often not routine cleanings.
  • Enroll early. Eye and breathing problems linked to the breed’s face shape can be treated as pre-existing once a vet records them.
  • Consider a wellness add-on if you expect regular grooming and dental visits. Compare its yearly cost with what it pays back.
